The clock began to toll midnight and Cinderella gave a cry of dismay. Turning from her companion, she rushed from the ball, the tears welling in her eyes making it difficult to see. Some revellers remembered the dazzling beauty who captured the Prince's attention, while some recalled only the woman who pushed passed them with hardly a glance. Gaining the castle gate, Cinderella paused for a moment to catch her breath and one last look to what had been one of the happiest nights of her life.

The bell tolled the eleventh marker and she turned, climbing into her carriage, which was waiting as if by magic. As she stepped up, the carriage began to move, causing her to stumble slightly while hastening her away from the castle before the spell wore off. One last glance out the window revealed a glimmering shoe laying in the roadway, tangled among the small weeds. One last souveneir for the young girl, one maddening reminder for the Prince.
